<image:title>Our Projects - The Sweetman Family Library at Lwani Memorial College</image:title>
<image:caption>Lwani Memorial College in the Amuru District of Northern Uganda was opened in 1995 to honor those who perished during Joseph Kony's attack on the district. The school receives little financial support from the government, instead relying on the support of the community to function. Thanks to the generosity of the Sweetman family, the Literate Earth Project was able to open a library at Lwani Memorial College. We'd like to publicly thank the Sweetmans and express our gratitude for their contribution.</image:caption>

It has a current enrollment of 517 students and is largely supported by partner NGOs working within the community. The small campus is nestled within a beautiful rural village and is now equipped with a brightly lit library in which students are able to study or enjoy an entertaining children's book.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Founded in 2005, Mivule Primary is a school in Kisubi just outside Uganda’s capital, Kampala. The campus is home to 456 students and just ten full time teaching staff who have helped create a new and unique learning environment on the grounds. Director Jude Nsumba works to include all area youth by offering scholarships to those families who may not have the means to send their children to his school, and has also developed a successful football program to sustain new scholarships. In November 2015 Mivule Primary opened the doors to a new LEP library where every one of its students can take full advantage of the joys and benefits of reading.</image:caption>

<image:caption>St Paul KAASO is home to 600 students, 300 of which are orphans or children taken from abusive situations. The school director, Dominic, the school's director has done an outstanding job making this school successful despite a limited budget. Along with basic primary education, children also learn to garden and grow pinneapples, passionfruit, and grains as a means of income for the school. St Paul is the highest performing school in Rakai district, but currently only has one syllabus book per class. They have a small existing library with children’s books, but will greatly benefit from what LEP has to offer.</image:caption>

As with many schools in the area, Luweero had limited access to syllabus books, and virtually no general reading texts. <image:caption>In addition to offering a quality education to the Masaka community, St Mugagga Vocational School provides valuable life skills such as bricklaying, sewing, and computer literacy to its students. While the campus itself is lacking in basic resources, they work to brainstorm creative solutions to their problems, such as using burlap sacks for sewing templates. We are both excited and eager to reward such an innovative campus with the tools they need to further succeed, and cannot wait to see where this opportunity takes them!</image:caption>

The library is run solely by volunteers Moses Ssenyonga and Namale Nuru, both of whom have made great strides to improve attendance and general knowledge of the library within the community. A university student studying Computer Science, Moses has also created his own website for the Ndejje library in an effort to track inventory and spread awareness. The school’s 623 students are eager to learn, with some walking over 5 miles every day just to attend, but they struggle to work with a ratio of just one book for every 20 students. In March 2016 St Joseph’s Njala welcomed LEP board members as they worked together to prepare and open the school’s first library. Students are now able to visit on a daily basis to study with new syllabus books and explore the world of reading through novels and children’s story books.</image:caption>
